Sprayed Fire-Resistive Material (SFRM) is often used as one component in a building’s fireproofing measures. While it is mainly used for insulating steel, metal decks, beams and joists from high temperatures during a fire, it is has appealing thermal acoustical properties and inhibits condensation. When fire spreads, this material expands and insulates the surface of the structure.
Cement or gypsum are the major ingredients because both of them harden as they dry.
SFRM is not appropriate for surfaces which experience moisture or high humidity, as these will deteriorate the material and may cause mold growth. In general, SFRM is a porous product.
There are three density standards for this material – low, medium and high. The U.S. National Fireproofing Contactors Association has assembled information and guidelines for wet and dry SFRMs, preparation, application, repair and safety issues.
