Living Room Carpentry in Chelsea, Manhattan 10011
According to Paul L. Whalen, Partner & Studio Leader at Robert A.M. Stern Architects: βThe Cortland captures the essence of West Chelsea β both its distinctive residential heritage and its bold industrial structures β to become a new landmark on the Hudson riverfront.β Opened just two years ago, this attractive 25-story edifice offers bright, luxurious condo living across from the 500-acre Hudson River Park.
One savvy homeowner asked us to renovate her light-filled living room with wall molding and fresh paint. Wall molding has a storied history beginning with Greek and Roman architecture. The former tended to use it to adorn public buildings, while the Romans installed wall trim in grandiose palaces. It adds depth and texture, creating a more sophisticated and alluring interior.
The installation process is an elaborate planning and measuring adventure to assure every single piece is exactly parallel to the walls, floor, ceiling and one another. The corners must be mitered perfectly, and the final result, exquisitely seamless. Placing trim on the walls in the recessed window walls was brilliant. The entire project raised the bar in this residence with a subtle but strong nod to the Romans, who led the way for contemporary residences to capitalize on ancient designs that enhance modern interiors.
