How To Choose A Paint Finish

Choosing the Perfect Paint Finish

What Is A Paint Finish and Which One Is Best?

A paint finish or sheen is just the fancy term for how shiny or dull the dried‑paint surface looks (and feels).
Same paint color, different vibe.
Paint finishes range from zero shine to full gloss, each bringing its own unique character to your space.

The level of sheen not only influences how colors appear but also adds depth and texture to a room.
When deciding on a paint finish, one should consider the surface, intended use of the space, and lighting.

The 6 most common paint finishes:

  • Flat

    Perfect for: Ceilings, low-traffic walls.

    • Pros: Hides imperfections, no shine
    • Cons: unable to wipe and clean

  • Matte

Good for: Walls in living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms

    • Pros: Slight shine makes easier to wipe and clean. Contemporary look.
    • Cons: Scrubbing or frequent cleaning can rub off the finish, leaving noticeable patches or streaks.

  • Eggshell

Good for: High-traffic walls, living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms

    • Pros: Shinier than Matte makes it easier to wipe and clean.
    • Cons: Hard to touch up and can highlight imperfections on surfaces.

  • Satin

Perfect for: High-traffic commercial space walls, trim, doors, and cabinets

    • Pros: Shinier than Eggshell makes it easier to wipe and clean. Good for bathrooms and kitchens.
    • Cons: Hard to touch up and can highlight imperfections on surfaces.

  • Semi-Gloss

         Good for: Trim, doors, cabinets

    • Pros: Shinier than Satin makes it easy to wipe and clean. Reflects a lot of light. Good for bathrooms and kitchens.
    • Cons: Hard to touch up and can highlight imperfections on surfaces.

  • Gloss/High-Gloss
Bold elegant finish great for statement rooms, trim, and cabinets.
    • Pros: The shiniest of paint finishes makes a room, cabinets or trim stand out.
    • Cons: It reflects tons of light, highlighting any imperfections. Needs lots of surface prep to use Gloss. Touch-ups are almost impossible. Recommend an experienced professional for this application.

Want more details on Paint Finishes??

It might seem hard to believe that paint started out, myriad centuries ago, as essentially lead with wine or vinegar added.

The building boom in the U.S. in the 1950s spawned the first synthetic petrochemical paint composition.

As technology evolved in the paint laboratories, a variety of “finishes” was developed for different looks, feel and function.

Ranging from zero shine to high gloss, we now have a few products in the middle.

The level of sheen not only influences how colors appear, but also can add depth and texture to a room. The top considerations for each one are:

¨ Aesthetics

¨ Surface

¨ Function of space

¨ Lighting

¨ Moisture presence

¨ Professional painting experience

Flat paint contains the lowest sheen of all, barely none, and the least reflective properties. It hides surface imperfections better than others for its chalky texture, though it is not conducive to wiping clean. Scuffs and marks probably will need painting over, which is not difficult and fades nicely into itself around the new paint. It performs well on ceilings, walls, hallways and low traffic areas where it’s not likely to be marred. Flat paint has been the most popular choice for interior walls, but matte and eggshell now command a larger share of interior paint product sales.

Matte paint is very close to flat on the low luster scale, but has a slight sheen, offering a tiny bit more reflection and additional durability. Still, it is best used on walls that do not come into contact with people, pets and furnishings all the time. It offers a hint of contemporary style and can be wiped very gently, as any scrubbing will wear it away. This is a good choice for dining rooms, living rooms and bedrooms.

Eggshell paint has a stronger consistency in the finish, with more sheen than flat or matte and a softer appearance. It can last and look good longer and be wiped clean. The perfect places include halls, stairway walls, family rooms, home offices and kids’ spaces.

Satin paint is a long-standing favorite for its smooth, almost pearl-like finish, and enduring appearance. Its sheen provides an energy and vitality to color, which emits a comfortable, attractive radiance. It is more challenging to touch up, and imperfections on the surface may be visible especially on walls with natural or artificial lighting on them.

Semi-gloss paint may have been the answer to gloss paint’s super high shine. It is less glossy with the durability and easy cleaning attributes of its high gloss cousin. It may accentuate flaws on the surface, and it is highly prized in bathrooms and kitchens for being easy to clean and providing a stronger moisture barrier. It also functions very well on trim and wainscoting. It is not, however, easily touched up.

Gloss paint offers more than 70% gloss content and makes a bold, colorful, dynamic statement. Meticulous prep is imperative for smooth coats, and it is found in many commercial establishments where reflecting light and enhanced durability are desired. It’s not recommended for home walls, though it is exceptionally easy to clean, like for a playroom, cabinets and trim.
