Fort Greene Wallpaper Installation

Brooklyn Condo Stairway Wall Transformed 11205

Of all the wonderful spaces for wallpaper, we find staircase walls can be the most overlooked. Not for this brownstone condo, tucked away on a tree-lined, one-way street in the Fort Greene neighborhood of Brooklyn. The 30-acre Fort Greene park was the first park developed in Brooklyn, and we wonder if the birds in the park inspired the wallpaper design choice.

Hanging wallpaper is a very precise, detail-oriented kind of project. It takes an experienced combination of understanding adhesive products and handling large sheets of paper, you know, without getting it stuck to itself during movement. The sharpness of cutting tools takes on new meaning when slicing wallpaper, and one simply cannot spend more than a few seconds matching the pattern before the sticky side wants to find its place permanently on the wall.

Here, we felt like we were in some exotic aviary, but thankfully, these birds did not move, and we were able to finish the job without flying away ourselves. This pattern is named Savuti after one of the Africa’s beloved national parks. It was purchased for this project from the 150-year-old, award-winning Cole & Son design house. Since the Mediterranean’s southern coast borders Africa, we wandered down to Black Iris for some fresh Middle Eastern food. It was nice enough to sit outside and watch for a hornbill bird. We thought maybe one would fly off the wallpaper.
