Wood Slats Replacement on Upper West Side 10024

There was a time when interior residential design presented every room enclosed in its own walls with a door. Heating would have been one consideration, with fireplaces or heat sources in each room before central heating could reach all the spaces. Frank Lloyd Wright was an early proponent of the open concept design, which began unfolding in the 1950s. Life was not so formal any more, open plans make small homes feel larger, and families enjoyed the kitchen visual to living and dining spaces.

There are several ways to create an open concept while still embracing room definition. We loved this project in Manhattan where we made a pony wall and rich black walnut bar shelf between the living room and dining room. But the really wonderful, challenging, stunning and mostly open vertical accent is the custom, butcher block shelving connected with upright brass bars on one edge of the living room.

The photos tell the story. We cut where needed, built what was necessary and hand crafted this spectacular, modern, open-shelf piece. From the practical side of improved air circulation and visual advantages to the decorative accents on the walnut shelves and the sturdy shelves themselves, it’s a very innovative way to create open space with room clarification. All along, I think most of our crew was thinking about how they could do something like this in their own homes, the ultimate compliment.
