The 17th century French Renaissance spawned many developments in art, culture, architecture, music and literature. People wanted more light and air in their homes, along with the idea of walking outside through very tall windows. Thus the door with glass panes evolved. Because it began in France, it has carried along the name French door. Its symmetry and balance may have been inspired by the ancient Romans’ love for geometry and order.
Dykes Lumber Company, which opened in 1909 in New York City, is one of our go-to places for door construction. When they finished this custom French door, we primed, painted and installed it in this client’s beautiful Upper West Side home. Glass door knobs on the French door and other doors here raise the bar on interior elegance. Pressing melted glass into cast iron molds was patented in 1825 by John P. Bakewell. The result of this new process was mass production of glass, making glass tableware and ornamental accents like door knobs affordable.
Interior French doors can increase home value and provide a wonderful space separation with natural light. They also offer a profound design statement and make spaces appear and feel larger, always a bonus in some of the tight residences in the Big Apple. We installed these perfectly on their hinges to swing comfortably and parallel to the floor and one another before adding the glamourous glass door knobs.
